Magnitude-5.4 earthquake occurs in southeastern Iran at around 07:50 March 5. No immediate reports of damage or injuries.
A magnitude-5.4 earthquake occurred in far southwestern Sistan and Baluchestan Province at around 07:50 March 5. The epicenter was about 66 km (41 miles) north-northwest of Fannuj. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 35 km (22 miles), and moderate shaking was probably felt near the epicenter in far southwestern Sistan and Baluchestan Province, as well as light shaking throughout the rest of southern and central Sistan and Baluchestan, southeastern Kerman, and eastern Hormozgan provinces. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake, and significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are likely over the coming days.
Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.
Out of an abundance of caution, consider vacating multistory buildings where shaking occurred until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Monitor and plan for aftershocks.
