Panama: Unionized construction workers launch 24-hour nationwide strike and related protests March 19 /update 1

Unionized construction workers to strike in areas across Panama through at least 07:00 March 20; protests reported in several locations.

Warning

Workers affiliated with the National Union of Workers of Construction and Similar Industries (Sindicato Unico Nacional de Trabajadores de la Industria de la Construccion y Similares, SUNTRACS) have launched a 24-hour strike across Panama on March 19. The purpose of the work stoppage is to denounce the reported closure of the organization's bank accounts. The labor action will reportedly run through at least 07:00 March 20; strike organizers may announce additional, related work stoppages over the short term.

Participating workers have also staged protests in locations across the country and announced their intent to block dozens of roads. Protest activity has reportedly impeded the flow of traffic on the following routes, among others:

  • Panama City: Cinta Costera; Avenida Balboa; Via Espana

  • Colon Area: Multiple routes in Barrio Sur neighborhood and in vicinity of Policlinica Dr. Hugo Espadafora Franco

  • Changuinola Area: Puente de los Deseos

Additional demonstrations and accompanying roadblocks will probably materialize on short notice over the coming hours. Localized disruptions to businesses, transport, and public services will likely affect areas that are subject to protest activity. Police will almost certainly deploy to monitor the demonstrations and may attempt to disperse protesters and reopen blocked routes. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if police attempt to forcibly disperse protesters.

Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Consider taking alternative routes to avoid protest sites, roadblocks, and related disruptions. Check roads' statuses and local traffic conditions before traveling. If operating in an area where violence breaks out, immediately depart the vicinity and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials.
