Ongoing protests reported in major cities in Kenya on June 20; increased security likely especially near Parliament building in Nairobi.

Warning

As of midday June 20, nationwide protests are occurring amid a heightened security presence, causing localized disruptions to ground travel. Activists are protesting against the new Finance Bill, which critics say would include increased taxes. In Nairobi, participants gathered at various undisclosed locations within the city's central business district at 12:00 before marching to Parliament. Similar movements have been reported in Eldoret, Isiolo, Kisumu, Nakuru, and Nyeri.

Political protests in Kenya tend to draw several thousand participants; strong participation is likely. Protests in other cities are also likely. Authorities will almost certainly deploy an increased security presence in affected cities during the demonstrations; in Nairobi, increased security is particularly likely near Parliament, including road closures and checkpoints. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely; clashes between security forces and protesters cannot be ruled out.

Avoid all gatherings as a standard security precaution. Allow additional time to reach nearby destinations if transiting through a protest location. Heed the instructions of local authorities. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
