Jordan: Additional protests in solidarity with Gazans likely to occur in Amman through at least early July

Additional pro-Palestinian demonstrations likely in Amman, Jordan, through at least early July; heightened security and disruptions likely.

Warning

Additional protests denouncing the Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip will likely occur in Amman through at least early July. Thousands of people participated in related protest activity in the central part of the capital following evening prayers on July 6. The demonstrators called on the Jordanian government to sever all ties with the Israeli government in protest of Tel Aviv's military campaign in Gaza.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy an increased security presence to monitor any large demonstrations that occur. When protests occur near foreign diplomatic missions, Jordanian authorities typically deploy a heavy security presence and close nearby streets to control crowd sizes and preempt clashes with protesters. However, clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out during any future demonstrations. Police have previously resorted to the use of tear gas and water cannons to disperse protests that have materialized near Israel's diplomatic mission in Jordan's capital. Transport and business disruptions will likely also affect areas subject to protest activity and increased security measures.

Avoid all protests. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent affected areas and any disruptions. Immediately depart the location and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building if large gatherings materialize in your area, especially near foreign diplomatic missions. Follow the instructions of local authorities and your home government.
