India: Trade union calls for protests across Kerala State Aug. 5

Trade union calls for protests at district collectorate offices across Kerala State, India, Aug. 5. Increased security likely.

Informational

The Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) has called for sit-in protests at all district collectorate offices across Kerala State Aug. 5 to denounce the state government's labor policies. Dozens to a few hundred people will likely participate in each event, with the largest turnout expected in Thiruvananthapuram and other district headquarters. INTUC will also hold a rally toward the Government Secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram Aug. 21. The start times for the events are unclear; demonstrations typically occur from late morning through the afternoon.

Heightened security measures, including traffic restrictions and security cordons, are likely around related protests. Localized transport disruptions are probable along march routes and protest sites. Isolated scuffles between police and activists are possible, especially if the former forcibly disperse participants.

Avoid the protests as a precaution. Allow additional travel time near any gathering. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Do not attempt to cross roadblocks, as protesters may react violently; wait for authorities to dismantle them.
