Kenya: Authorities confirm power supply disruptions affecting various parts of country as of late Aug. 30

Officials report electricity disruptions across Kenya as of late Aug. 30; transport, business, telecommunications disruptions likely.

Critical

Kenya Power authorities have confirmed that power supply disruptions were affecting various parts of the country as of late Aug. 30, except for the North Rift region and parts of the Western region. Kenya Power did not immediately confirm the cause of the widespread power outage nor estimate when electricity would be fully restored across the country. Officials will almost certainly provide updates over the coming hours.

Transport, business, and telecommunications disruptions will likely affect areas that are subject to the power outage. Malfunctioning traffic signals may disrupt the flow of traffic in some areas and lead to longer driving times. The electricity disruptions could also result in the temporary unavailability of essential services in affected areas, such as hospitals, ATMs, and gas stations. Additionally, power disruptions could adversely affect security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences; opportunistic criminal activity could increase during the blackout.

Charge mobile and essential electrical devices when possible and ensure backup batteries are available. Exercise caution when driving in areas that are experiencing electricity disruptions. Park vehicles in secure areas. Confirm business appointments. Verify that security systems are working. Ensure that generators are functional and refuel devices when necessary.
