Russia: Fire crews continue to respond to major fire following drone strike in Proletarsk as of late August /update 2

Emergency crews continue response to oil depot fire in Proletarsk, Russia, as of late August. State of emergency declared.

Warning

Firefighters are continuing to respond to a major blaze at the Flagman state-owned oil depot near Proletarsk as of late August. The fire started due to a Ukrainian drone strike on Aug. 18, and has been expanding since. On Aug. 23, at least two explosions occurred in concomitance with a second drone strike, temporarily halting emergency operations; it is unclear if they were caused by the attack. Since Aug 25, the fire had reportedly spread to the western tanks of the depot. Local authorities have declared a state of emergency. Since Aug. 27, authorities in Proletarsk issued recommendations to close windows, use respiratory protection devices if outside, and keep livestock enclosed due to the deterioration of air quality in the area. Since Aug. 18, at least 49 firefighters were injured in the effort to control the fire. The roads leading to the oil depot remain closed. As of Aug. 27, there is reportedly no danger of the fire spreading to residential areas.

Authorities will almost certainly maintain a heightened security presence in the affected area until firefighters extinguish the blaze and give the all-clear. Localized transport and business disruptions will likely affect the vicinity of the fire over the coming hours. Officials may close local roads or issue evacuation orders on short notice to facilitate the emergency response and ensure public safety.

Avoid the area until authorities give the all-clear. Seek alternative routes and allow additional time for travel near the affected site. Follow all instructions from security personnel, including any evacuation orders. Consider remaining indoors to avoid smoke exposure, especially if you suffer from a respiratory illness, such as asthma, or conditions that lead to increased risk from smoke exposure. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water.
