Australia: Unionized Qantas engineers slated to strike at airports nationwide through at least early October /update 1

Unionized Qantas engineers set to stage rolling strikes at airports across Australia through at least early October. Reconfirm travel plans.

Informational

Unionized engineers employed by Qantas Airways (QF) are set to stage strikes at airports across Australia through at least early October. The labor actions began early Sept. 26 with a walkout at Melbourne Airport (MEL). However, union leaders have threatened to launch a series of rolling strikes at other major airports across the country if worker demands for increased salaries are not met. Unless averted, the rolling strikes could impact various facilities, including Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD), Brisbane Airport (BNE), and Perth Airport (PER). Airport and airline officials have implemented contingency plans to minimize the impact on operations and flights; nevertheless, some Qantas flight disruptions are likely. The work stoppages could be suspended early if labor and management reach an agreement in negotiations.

Demonstrations or pickets and heightened security are possible at airports across the country during the strike period. Lingering disruptions are possible for several hours after the work stoppages end.

Confirm flight reservations if traveling during the strike period. Make alternative travel arrangements for time-sensitive matters if necessary. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
