Germany: Unionized healthcare workers to strike nationwide, protest in Frankfurt Sept. 16

Unionized medical staff to strike across Germany Sept. 16; demonstration planned at Roemerberg, Frankfurt.

Informational

Unionized doctors employed at municipal healthcare facilities and represented by the Marburger Bund plan to stage a warning strike across Germany on Sept. 16. The purpose of the labor action is to demand improved salaries. In addition to the daylong strike, participants will protest at Roemerberg in Frankfurt 13:00-15:00. It remains unclear how many participants may attend.

Medical service disruptions will probably affect municipal hospitals and clinics nationwide during the strike period and could linger into the morning of Sept. 17. Participating physicians may also stage picket demonstrations targeting public healthcare facilities. Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the demonstration in Frankfurt, as well as any other protests that may occur. Low-level confrontations between protesters and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.

Confirm medical appointments at municipal hospitals scheduled for Sept. 16. Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near any protest sites, particularly in Frankfurt. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers.
