Portugal: Unionized healthcare workers to strike nationwide Sept. 24-25

Unionized medical staff to strike across Portugal Sept. 24-25; healthcare service disruptions likely.

Informational

Unionized healthcare workers affiliated with the National Federation of Doctors (FNAM) union plan to conduct a nationwide strike Sept. 24-25. The purpose of the labor action is to demand increased salaries. Participants will also conduct a central protest at the Ministry of Health in Lisbon from 15:00 on Sept. 24. It remains unclear how many participants may attend.

Medical service disruptions will likely affect medical facilities nationwide during the strike period and could linger into the morning of Sept. 26. Other picket protests are possible in addition to the main demonstration. Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near any demonstrations that occur.

Reconfirm all medical appointments scheduled for Sept. 24-25. Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the Ministry of Health in the afternoon and evening hours of Sept. 24. Heed instructions from authorities.
