Informational

Activists plan to gather in Brasilia and Araraquara to mark the second anniversary of Brazil's Congress riot on Jan. 8. The largest gatherings are likely to take place in Brasilia, and officials will almost certainly maintain heightened security around government buildings in the capital. Demonstrators will gather at the Three Powers Plaza (Praca dos Tres Poderes) from 11:00, and President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will meet with government representatives and activists outside the Palacio do Planalto. Other possible locations for demonstrations and gatherings in Brasilia include the Ministries Esplanade (Esplanada dos Ministerios) and other government buildings. In the city of Araraquara, Sao Paulo State, demonstrators will also gather outside the Bank Workers' Union of Araraquara (Sindicato dos Bancarios de Araraquara) from 19:00.

Localized traffic disruptions and increased security are likely near gatherings on Jan. 8. Protesters may also gather in other urban centers, especially in state capitals, such as Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Counter-demonstrations are possible. While gatherings are likely to pass peacefully, isolated clashes cannot be ruled out.

Avoid protests as a precaution. Plan for extra travel time near government buildings. Heed instructions from authorities.
