A magnitude-6.0 earthquake occurred in the Coral Sea, offshore of central Vanuatu, at around 1748 Jan. 10. The epicenter was about 50 km (31 miles) east of Lakatoro, Malampa Province. The tremor occurred at a depth of approximately 159 km (98 miles), and weak shaking may have occurred throughout the northern and central regions of Vanuatu. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties because of the earthquake; significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are possible over the coming days. The event did not prompt any tsunami advisories.
