Australia: Officials enforcing stay-at-home orders in several areas of northern New South Wales through Aug. 18

Stay-at-home order in effect for several local government areas in northern New South Wales, Australia, through Aug. 18 due to COVID-19.

Warning

Event

Officials in New South Wales (NSW) have implemented stay-at-home orders in certain local government areas (LGAs) in the north of the state through Aug. 18 due to COVID-19 concerns. The measure is in effect for Bogan, Bourke, Brewarrina, Coonamble, Dubbo, Gilgandra, Narromine, Walgett, and Warren. Residents may only leave their homes to purchase essential goods, provide care, obtain medical assistance, or work in designated essential industries. Only one person can depart the household daily to buy essential goods. Officials limit gatherings to two people, though funerals may have up to 10 attendees. Individuals must stay inside their LGA or within 10 km (6 miles) of their residence unless working in specified industries. Individuals must have facemasks on their persons at all times and wear them in indoor public locations, on public transport, and at some outdoor venues, such as food markets.

Businesses must let employees work from home during the stay-at-home period; violations of this requirement are punishable by fines of up to AUD 10,000 for corporations or AUD 2,000 for sole proprietorships. Most retail stores must close, though essential businesses like banks and supermarkets can operate. Officials require businesses to limit occupancy to one person per 4 square meters (43 square feet). Food establishments may only offer carryout services. All entertainment venues are closed.

Most travel to and from LGAs under stay-at-home orders is prohibited, except for specifically defined reasons. Authorities will likely deploy additional security personnel to enforce the restrictions and have advised residents to carry proper identification when traveling. Checkpoints are possible, especially on main roads in the affected area.

Advice

Follow all official instructions. Remain polite and cooperative if questioned by security personnel. Avoid crowded areas as a precaution. Stock up on essential supplies. Plan for business disruptions. Confirm appointments if operating in affected LGAs.
