Authorities have introduced travel restrictions along with strict localized controls in Hulunbuir, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. As of Aug. 9, authorities are requiring individuals in the city to postpone nonessential travel. People who travel from Hulunbuir to another place in China must produce a negative result from a nucleic acid COVID-19 test taken within 48 hours prior to departure. Most provincial and municipal governments require individuals who have recently traveled to Hulunbuir to undergo a mandatory institutional quarantine period.

Officials have designated the Shenbao Community in Hulunbuir's Hailar District as a medium-risk area. Residents of the location and individuals with recent exposure to it must remain in their homes; exceptions may be possible for essential reasons. Authorities are implementing tight controls in nearby areas and will probably close most nonessential businesses and restrict travel to and from adjacent communities. Officials are likely to impose gathering and business restrictions in other areas of Hulunbuir as a precaution.

While it is unclear how long the controls will remain in place, similar measures in other parts of China have typically lasted about two weeks. Officials in Hulunbuir have begun COVID-19 testing for all residents; officials will likely carry out several rounds of testing in medium-risk areas before easing restrictions. Officials could place additional communities in Inner Mongolia under localized movement and gathering controls if more COVID-19 cases emerge.

Hulunbuir is about 649 km (403 miles) north-northwest of Tongliao.
