Europe: Adverse weather forecast for eastern regions through at least Aug. 6

Officials issue red thunderstorm warnings for eastern Europe through at least Aug. 6. Disruptions are possible.

Warning

Event

Thunderstorms with heavy rainfall, strong winds, and possible flooding are forecast across eastern Europe through at least Aug. 6. The affected area includes eastern Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, northeastern Italy, Kosovo, southeastern Poland, northern Serbia, Slovakia, and Slovenia. As of early Aug. 5, authorities have issued red-level thunderstorm warnings across portions of Bekes, Csongrad-Csanad, Hajdu-Bihar, Jasz-Nagykun-Szolnok, and Szabolcs-Szatmar-Bereg counties in Hungary as well as eastern Lesser Poland and Subcarpathian voivodeships in Poland. Additionally, orange-level warnings for thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and flooding are in place across western and southern Croatia, the rest of Hungary, northeastern Italy, Kosovo, southeastern Poland, Serbia, western Slovakia, and Slovenia. Yellow-level warnings for flooding, thunderstorms, and heavy rainfall are in place for the rest of the affected area. Authorities will likely issue new alerts or update/rescind existing advisories as weather conditions change over the coming days.

Hazardous Conditions
Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems. Sites located downstream from large reservoirs or rivers may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall. Landslides are possible in hilly or mountainous areas, especially where heavy rainfall has saturated the soil.

Transport
The severe weather will likely contribute to transport disruptions throughout the regions. Floodwaters and debris flows may render some bridges, rail networks, or roadways impassable, impacting overland travel in and around affected areas. Ponding on road surfaces could cause hazardous driving conditions on regional highways. Authorities could temporarily close some low-lying routes that become inundated by floodwaters. Traffic and commercial trucking delays might occur along regional highways. Flooding downpours could inundate some low-lying roads in areas with poor drainage. Strong winds might also pose a hazard to high-profile vehicles. Hazardous weather conditions might cause flight delays and cancellations at regional airports.

Advice

Monitor local media for weather-related updates and advisories. Confirm all transport reservations. Stay away from elevated streams, creeks, and other watercourses that are prone to flash flooding. Do not attempt to navigate flooded roadways. Exercise caution in elevated terrain due to the threat of landslides. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
