Myanmar: Officials continue to enforce COVID-19 restrictions in Yangon Region as of Aug. 12 /update 16

Authorities are maintaining restrictions Yangon Region amid ongoing COVID-19 activity. A 22:00-04:00 curfew has been in effect throughout the region since at least July 12. A five-person gathering limit also continues, in line with national regulations. Facemasks are mandatory in public places.

As of Aug. 12, the government continues to implement stay-at-home orders in 22 townships, including Bahan, Hlaingthaya, Dagon, Hlaing, Hmawbi, Insein, Kamayut, Kayan, Kyimyindaing, Mayangon, Mingaladon, Mingala Taungnyunt, North Dagon, Taikkyi, Sanchaung, Shwepyitha, South Okkalapa, North Okkalapa, Tamwe, Thaketa, Thingangyun, and Yankin. Officials permit only one person per day to leave households to purchase essential goods; two people per household can visit medical facilities. Exceptions are in place for people with emergency needs and medical, food, manufacturing, banking, and financial services workers. Residents must seek official permission to leave the townships for unapproved reasons. Vehicles cannot operate in or pass through the areas except for commuting for work, among others.

Some local authorities in other parts of Myanmar may require arrivals from Yangon to undergo stricter health checks and quarantine at their residence or government-designated facilities. Although the level of enforcement, heightened security is likely to continue. Transport and business disruptions will probably continue, particularly in townships under stay-at-home orders. Officials may enact new measures or expand the curbs if any additional outbreaks occur in the coming weeks.

Follow all official instructions. Remain polite and cooperative if stopped by security personnel for checks. Avoid crowded areas. Stock up on essential supplies as a precaution. Confirm all travel reservations; consider deferring nonessential travel to and from the affected townships. Make allowances for likely travel restrictions if operating in the region. Abide by national and local health and safety measures. Liaise with trusted contacts for further updates and guidance. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation. Ensure contingency plans account for further disruptive measures. Reconsider and reconfirm nonemergency health appointments.
