India: Farmers, political parties likely to stage protests nationwide through mid-October

Farmers, political parties likely to rally across India through mid-October. Tight security, localized disruptions probable at action sites.

Warning

Event

Farmers, opposition political parties, and other activists will likely stage additional protests across India through mid-October. The rallies follow an alleged vehicle-ramming incident involving a Bharatiya Janata Party minister that killed at least eight people during a farmers' rally in Lakhimpur Kheri District, Uttar Pradesh Oct. 3. Opposition parties, such as Indian National Congress (INC) and Samajwadi Party, will likely call for further demonstrations to denounce the BJP central government and demand action. Probable gathering points include government buildings and prominent roadways or highways, including in Lakhimpur Kheri and urban centers like Delhi, Ghaziabad, Kanpur, and Lucknow. Hundreds to thousands of people will probably participate in any demonstrations.

Authorities will likely enhance security measures, including deploying additional personnel and setting up barricades near any protest venue as a precaution. Tightened security protocols are particularly likely at Lakhimpur Kheri, as political leaders are reportedly scheduled to visit the district, as well as residences and offices of the political leaders. Localized transport disruptions are likely at rally sites, especially if demonstrators occupy roadways during the gatherings. Clashes are possible, particularly if police move to disperse protesters forcibly.

Advice

Avoid any protests as a precaution. Monitor local media for updates on protest sites and related disruptions, as organizers may not announce plans in advance. Allow additional time to reach destinations nearby demonstration locations. If any violence occurs nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter at a safe, non-government building. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
