Informational

Event

Indonesian authorities will likely increase security in Yahukimo Regency, Papua Province, through mid-October following clashes between the Yali and Kimyal tribes in Dekai District Oct. 3. Members of the Kimyal tribe allegedly attacked the Yali Tribe, killing at least six people and injuring 41 others. The attackers also set fire to some homes in the district. While specific details are unclear, reports indicate that the unrest was triggered by the death of former Yahukimo Regent Abock Busup. Security forces arrested 52 people during the incident and are conducting investigations. Around 1,000 residents have fled the area.

Heightened security measures and roadblocks may affect transport in the region, especially roads connecting towns. Tribe members could carry out further arson attacks over the coming weeks; clashes with security personnel are possible.

The incident site is about 43 km (27 miles) southeast of Wamena.
