Warning

Event

Activists from the Ramkhamhaeng Network for Democracy group plan to hold a commemorative event at the sculpture park in Thammasat University Tha Phra Chan Campus, Bangkok, from 16:00 Oct. 6 to mark the anniversary of a 1976 violent crackdown on student protesters at the university. Hundreds of people could participate in the event. Protests could occur in other locations, including Democracy Monument, Din Daeng Intersection, Government House, Lumphini Park, Victory Monument, Ratchaprasong Intersection, and Vibhavadi Rangsit Road.

Authorities will likely increase security at the sculpture park in Thammasat University and nearby areas. Localized transport disruptions and road closures are likely. Business disruptions may occur near gathering sites. Police may conduct mass arrests if the action violates COVID-19 restrictions, lese majeste laws, or permit requirements. Clashes between police and protesters are possible. Security forces have fired rubber bullets, tear gas, and water cannons at pro-democracy activists during recent demonstrations in Bangkok. Protesters have also used fireworks and homemade explosives, as well as erected roadblocks, and set fire to police motorcycles.

Advice

Avoid Thammasat University's sculpture park and nearby areas on the afternoon of Oct. 6 due to possible arrests and violence. Plan for localized transport disruptions; seek alternative routes to circumvent the protest sites. If violence occurs nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter at a safe, nongovernmental building. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
