Informational

Event

Activists associated with the Yellow Vests (Gilets Jaune) movement will stage two separate marches in Paris, June 4; these two routes do not converge.

One group of activists will gather at Place de Catalogne; the march will set off at 14:30 toward Place Valhubert. The march will follow the route Rue Jean Zay, Rue Froideveaux, Place Denfert Rochereau, Boulevard Arago, Boulevard St Marcel, and Boulevard de l'Hopital. Organizers are calling for social, fiscal, and climate justice, along with other demands.

The second group will gather at Place de la Nation. Participants will set off at 14:30 toward 84 Boulevard Voltaire. This march route route includes Boulevard Voltaire, Place Leon Blum, Rue de la Roquette, Boulevard de Menilmontant, Avenue de la Republique, and Boulevard Richard Lenoir. Organizers are denouncing mandatory COVID-19 vaccination.

Attendance levels are unknown. Authorities will almost certainly deploy additional police to monitor these demonstrations. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely. Low-level violence, especially targeted at the police, cannot be discounted.

Context

The Gilets Jaune movement has been protesting against various government policies since 2018. Protests had declined in recent months but have increased following the re-election of President Emmanuel Macron in April, and in advance of the legislative elections later in June. Further protests are likely.

Advice

Avoid the demonstration rally points and march routes. Consider alternate travel routes and allow extra time for public transport. Follow local transport and security advice. In the event of violence, leave the area immediately.
