Suspected jihadist militants targeted a military convoy with a double bomb attack killing at least 15 soldiers along the Bourzanga-Djibo highway in Namsiguia, Centre-Nord Region, Aug 9. The convoy first struck an initial roadside improvised explosive device, with a second being detonated shortly after emergency medical responders arrived at the scene. Security personnel deployed to the area to assist with evacuating the victims.

An increased security presence is likely in the area over the coming days. Further attacks in Burkina Faso's border regions are likely for the foreseeable future.

Context

The incident underscores the severe insecurity and risk of militant attacks across much of Burkina Faso. Islamist militants operating in the border regions continue to perpetrate such attacks and are usually the primary suspects.
