Dempster Highway between Eagle Plains, Yukon, and Fort McPherson, NWT, Canada, partially reopens as of Sept. 11.

Informational

Event

Authorities have partially reopened Dempster Highway 8 between Eagle Plains, Yukon Territory, and Fort McPherson, Northwest Territories, as of Sept. 11 after completing repairs to Eagle River Bridge. Vehicles over 63,500 kg (140,000 lbs) require prior clearance; it is unclear when officials will lift the weight limit.

The Dempster Highway is the only road between Yukon and the Northwest Territory and the only land route to Inuvik. Reports indicate food and fuel shortages in Inuvik during the bridge closure, and shortages may linger in the coming days as supplies reach communities amid the wight limit for freight trucks. Business disruptions are likely to continue for several days.

Eagle Plain is approximately 268 km (166 miles) south-southwest of Inuvik. Fort McPherson is approximately 114 km (71 miles) south-southwest of Inuvik.

Advice

Plan for shipping disruptions if moving goods between Yukon and the Northwest Territories.
