After the match, fans stormed the field; police fired tear gas to disperse them, sparking a stampede as fans rushed to the exit gates. The situation was exacerbated by the stadium being filled over capacity; reports indicate 42,000 tickets were sold for the match, while the stadium only has a capacity of 38,000 people. Multiple vehicles outside the stadium were also set ablaze. The death toll may climb further in the coming hours.

The Kanjuruhan Stadium is located around 16 km (10 miles) south-southwest of the city of Malang.
