Student protesters and security personnel have clashed at the arts campus of the University of Allahabad in Allahabad (Prayagraj) in Uttar Pradesh State, Dec. 19. Students were protesting increased tuition fees. Reports are emerging, but indicate that security personnel or police may have fired live ammunition to disperse stone-throwing protesters; there are unconfirmed reports of injuries.

Police will almost certainly remain deployed to the impact area in the coming hours and days; localized business and transport disruptions are likely to persist in the short-term. In the event of further protests, additional clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.
