Spain: Demonstrations possible nationwide through at least Sept. 3 in reaction to Women's World Cup awards ceremony controversy

Demonstrations by women's rights groups possible across Spain through at least Sept. 3. Transport disruptions, heightened security likely.

Informational

Event

Additional sporadic protests by women's rights groups are possible across Spain through at least Sept. 3 to demand the resignation of Luis Rubiales, President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, for what activists consider his unacceptable behavior toward a female soccer player during the Women's World Cup awards ceremony. Rubiales' recent suspension by FIFA is unlikely to dissuade activists from further gatherings.

Demonstrations over the issue have already occurred in several cities, including Madrid, Barcelona, and Oviedo. Local activist groups have also planned rallies at Plaza de Callao in Madrid, in front of the Museum of Modern Art in Vigo, and at unspecified locations in other cities for 20:00 Aug. 28. While most of the gatherings have as yet drawn only low numbers of participants, larger protests are possible over the weekend of Sept. 2-3. Localized transport disruptions and heightened security are likely at any protest sites.

Advice

Avoid protest locations as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near affected areas.
