Germany: Adverse winter weather forecast across much of the country through at least Nov. 30

Adverse winter weather forecast across much of Germany through at least Nov. 30. Hazardous travel conditions likely.

Warning

Adverse winter weather is forecast across much of Germany through at least Nov. 30. A low-pressure area will move in from the west Nov. 27-28, bringing strong winds and heavy precipitation to central, eastern, southern, and western Germany. Precipitation will likely fall as snow over elevated areas and also at times at lower elevations. Heavy rainfall is likely in the west Nov. 27-early Nov. 28. Further spells of both snow and rain are forecast across various parts of the country through Nov. 30. The combination of strong winds and snowfall may lead to periods of blowing and drifting snow and dropping temperatures will cause frost and black ice to form in many areas. Hazardous travel conditions are likely due to reduced visibility and slippery roads. Sporadic power outages are likely throughout the affected areas.

As of Nov. 27, the German Meteorological Service (DWD) has issued the following weather warnings across the affected area:

  • Red snowfall warnings (the second-highest level on a four-tier scale): Parts of western Hesse and northeastern Rhineland-Palatinate states.

  • Orange snowfall warnings: Across parts of central, southern, and western Germany.

  • Orange rainfall warnings: Parts of western North Rhine-Westphalia State.

  • Orange strong wind warnings: Parts of southwestern and western Baden-Wurttemberg and southern Bavaria states.

  • Yellow snowfall warnings: Across much of central and eastern and parts of southern and western Germany.

  • Yellow strong wind warnings: Parts of south-central, southwestern, and western Baden-Wurttemberg, northwestern Lower Saxony, southwestern North Rhine-Westphalia, northwestern Rhineland-Palatinate, and eastern Schleswig-Holstein states.

  • Yellow frost warnings: Across most of central, eastern, northern, southeastern, and western Germany.

  • Yellow black ice warnings: Parts of northern. eastern, south-central, southern, and western Germany.

Officials could update and possibly extend the coverage of weather alerts over the coming days.

The winter weather will likely cause ground and air transport disruptions in the region over the coming days. Traffic and commercial trucking delays are possible along regional highways. Dangerous and challenging driving conditions are also likely on secondary and rural roads in the affected states as maintenance crews prioritize clearing major routes. Authorities could close stretches of highway if driving conditions become too hazardous. Gusty winds may threaten to topple high-profile vehicles throughout the affected area. Flight delays and cancellations are likely due to ground stops and deicing operations at regional airports.

Monitor local media for updated weather information. Verify road conditions before driving in areas where heavy snowfall is forecast. Allow extra time to reach destinations in these areas and carry an emergency kit and warm clothes if driving is necessary, especially on secondary or rural routes that could become impassable. Plan accordingly for delivery delays if routing shipments by truck through the affected area. Confirm flights. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
