Mexico: Women's rights activists to demonstrate nationwide March 8

Women's rights groups to demonstrate in cities across Mexico March 8. Heightened security, localized disruptions likely.

Warning

Several women's rights organizations plan to demonstrate in cities across Mexico on March 8. The purpose of the action is to commemorate International Women's Day and draw attention to gender-based violence. Participation will probably vary significantly by location, with the largest gathering likely occurring in Mexico City, where participants will march from the Glorieta de las Mujeres Que Luchan (Women Who Fight Roundabout) to the Zocalo at 16:00. The following events will also probably draw significant attendance:

  • Guadalajara: March from the Rotonda located at the intersection of Avenida Alcalde and Avenida Hidalgo to the Glorieta de los Desaparecidos (Missing Persons Roundabout) at 16:30; March from Glorieta de los Desaparecidos to Matute Remus Bridge at 16:00.

  • Monterrey: Gathering at Explanada de los Heroes at 18:00.

  • Puebla: March from the El Gallito Clock Tower to the Zocalo at 17:00.

Increased security and localized transport disruptions are likely near all rally sites and march routes. Participants could gather outside government buildings and on major thoroughfares. Clashes between police and participants cannot be ruled out, particularly if demonstrators become overly disruptive or ignore police orders to disperse.

Avoid the protests as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations if operating near impacted areas. Seek alternative routes to circumvent any related transport disruptions. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Heed the instructions of authorities.
