Reunion: Unions representing public employees call for strike and protest in Saint-Denis and Saint-Pierre, March 19

Unions representing public employees to hold islandwide strike and demonstrations in Saint-Denis and Saint-Pierre, Reunion, March 19.

Informational

Unions representing public employees have called for an islandwide strike on March 19 to demand better pay in the public sector. The following demonstrations are planned from 09:00:

  • In Saint-Denis, participants will gather at the old train station and march towards the Prefecture.

  • In Saint-Pierre, participants will gather at the beach garden and march towards the city hall.

Additional protests are possible elsewhere. It is unclear how many participants the events may draw. The strike could cause disruptions to public services. Heightened security and localized road disruptions are likely along the march routes. Most actions will probably remain peaceful, though isolated clashes between activists and police cannot be ruled out.

Reconfirm public services availability on March 19. Avoid all demonstrations. Leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Heed the instructions of local authorities.
