Belgium: Farmers to demonstrate in Brussels April 16

Farmers to protest at Place Jean Rey/Jan Reyplein, Brussels, Belgium from 13:00 April 16. Heightened security likely.

Warning

Farmers plan to protest at Place Jean Rey/Jan Reyplein in Brussels from 13:00 April 16. The purpose of the demonstration is to denounce agricultural regulations. It is unclear how many participants will attend.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near Place Jean Rey-Jay Reyplein throughout the day April 16. Some participants may drive tractors into the city; this may cause disruptions on major roadways throughout Brussels. Disruptions are possible at nearby transit stations include Brussels-Schuman, Maelbeek, Schuman, and Brussels-Luxembourg stations. Participants may attempt to march to the European Parliament. Confrontations, potentially escalating to clashes, between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the affected area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near Place Jean Rey/Jan Reyplein on April 16. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.

Brussels experienced several farmers' protests in early 2024 denouncing EU agricultural policies. The most severe protests occurred on Feb. 26, when several thousand farmers on at least 900 tractors gathered in the European Quarter before clashing with police.
