Brazil: Indigenous groups to protest in Brasilia April 22-26

Indigenous groups to protest in Brasilia, Brazil, April 22-26. Localized disruptions, heightened security likely.

Warning

Indigenous groups supporting the Free Land (Terra Livre) movement will maintain protest camps at Brasilia's Eixo Cultural Ibero-Americano, located on the Monumental Axis (Eixo Monumental), April 22-26. The organizers are affiliated with the National Articulation of Indigenous Peoples (Articulacao Nacional dos Povos Indigenas, APIB) and have planned several cultural events, protests, and marches around the capital through April 26 to demand the protection of indigenous people's rights. Thousands of protesters are likely to join.

An increased police presence, as well as localized transport and business disruptions, are likely around the protest sites and large gatherings until April 26. Protesters are likely to gather along main thoroughfares and outside government buildings in the coming days; demonstrators will probably stage protests at the Three Powers Plaza (Praca dos Tres Poderes) and along the Ministries Esplanade. Gatherings are likely to remain peaceful; however, skirmishes are possible.

Avoid protests as a routine security precaution. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Allow extra time for travel in the vicinity of the gatherings; consider taking alternative routes.
