Denmark: Emergency crews responding to fire in Copenhagen's Borsen building April 16 /update 1

Emergency crews continue to respond to major fire in Copenhagen's Borsen, Denmark April 16. Evacuations, disruptions reported.

Warning

Firefighters continue to respond to a major fire in the Borsen building on Slotsholmsgade in central Copenhagen as of the afternoon of April 16. The fire is reportedly under control, and nearby buildings have been deemed secure; however, evacuated people will likely not be allowed to return to the evacuated buildings in the upcoming hours due to the ongoing firefighters' action. Emergency crews, including soldiers, maintain a perimeter around the building, restricting access to Christiansborg Square, Slotsholmsgade, Borsgade, and the Knippelsbro Bridge. The cause of the blaze remains unclear. No casualties have been reported. Police advise against driving private vehicles to the inner city amid the disruption caused by the emergency response.

The fire may noticeably worsen air quality in the surrounding area over the short term. Authorities will almost certainly keep a heightened security presence at the site until firefighters extinguish the blaze and authorities complete any subsequent investigative work. Transport and business disruptions are likely in the affected area over the coming hours. Officials may close additional roads or issue evacuation orders for the immediate area on short notice to facilitate the emergency response and ensure public safety.

Avoid the incident site until the fire is extinguished and authorities vacate the scene. Seek alternative routes to circumvent the affected area and any disruptions. Consider remaining indoors if heavy smoke is in your area, especially if you suffer from a respiratory illness, such as asthma, or conditions that lead to increased risk from smoke exposure. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water. Heed all instructions issued by local officials.
