France: Civic groups to stage two separate protests in Paris, April 21 /update 1

Two activist groups to hold separate protests in central Paris, France, April 21. Heightened security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Two activist groups will stage separate protests in central Paris on April 21. One group will stage a protest march against alleged state racism and islamophobia and for better protection of minors. Attendees will gather at 14:00 at Metro station Barbes and then march to Place de la Republique. Based on previous events, several thousand will likely take part.

A second group will rally at Place de la Bastille from 14:30. The purpose of the demonstration is to express solidarity with the people of Haiti. It is unclear how many participants may attend.

Local authorities will likely deploy additional police and heightened security to facilitate the demonstrations. Some localized transport disruptions are possible in the vicinity of the protest. The protest will likely pass off peacefully; however, low-level confrontations between demonstrators and frustrated motorists cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the protests as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the affected areas. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
