Protesters cause significant traffic disruptions in Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, French Guiana, on April 16. Blockades reported.

Warning

Protesters are blocking traffic in Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni early April 16. The main roads leading to the town, including Route Nationale 1, which connects the town to Cayenne, have been blocked with burning debris. Demonstrators have also blocked the intersection of Chemin de Fatima and Chemin de Paddock, as well as roads near Lac-Bleu. The protesters are denouncing insecurity in the area.

Protesters may block more routes in the area in the coming days. During protests, traffic and business operations are likely to be disrupted. If security forces try to disperse protesters, clashes are possible.

Avoid protests as a precaution. Plan on transit disruptions and seek alternative routes to circumvent the impacted area. Do not attempt to pass through protestor-erected roadblocks. Wait for the police to dismantle them before proceeding. Comply with directives given by authorities.
