Germany: Activists to demonstrate in Berlin and Frankfurt April 20 /update 1

Anti-extremist activists to protest in central Berlin and Frankfurt, Germany on April 20. Heightened security likely.

Informational

Activists plan to protest in Berlin and Frankfurt on April 20. The purpose of the demonstration is to denounce right-wing extremism. It is unclear how many participants may attend. In Berlin, demonstrators will gather at Max-Beckmann-Platz, located at Heinsestrasse 39, 10:30-13:00. In Frankfurt, protesters will gather at the Old Opera (Alte Oper) at 13:00 before marching to the Roemer on Roemerberg. Organizers did not detail the planned march route.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the protest sites. Though unlikely, low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers or frustrated motorists cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the affected areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the protest site. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
