US: A magnitude-4.8 earthquake in New Jersey causes minor transport disruptions on April 5. /update 1

A magnitude-4.8 earthquake that occurred in New Jersey, US April 5 caused minor transport disruptions but did not cause major damages.

Informational

The magnitude-4.8 earthquake that occurred in New Jersey at around 10:23 April 5 has prompted some transport disruptions in the mid-Altantic and northeast regions of the US, though it has not resulted in major damages or casualties. As a result of the earthquake, Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) has issued a ground stop through at least 12:30; an earlier ground stop at the John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) has been lifted, though residual disruptions at JFK are likely.

Authorities also temporarily halted traffic between the Lincoln Tunnel and Holland Tunnel, which connects New Jersey to New York City, so that inspections could be carried out. Heavy traffic and residual delays are likely at the tunnels throughout April 5. New Jersey Transit announced that its rail services are subject to 20-minute delays as the agency carries out inspections of bridges. Additional transport disruptions, especially in New Jersey and the greater New York metropolitan area, are likely.

Most disruptions are a consequence of authorities carrying out inspections out of an abundance of caution; there have been no reports of the earthquake causing major damage or casualties, and most utilities are operating normally. Light aftershocks are likely over the coming days and may prompt renewed disruptions.

Out of an abundance of caution, consider vacating multistory buildings where shaking occurred until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Monitor and plan for aftershocks. Reconfirm transport arrangements. Prepare for some minor disruptions.
