Myanmar: Tourist killed by landmine in Shan state November 26

A foreign tourist was killed and another one was wounded by a landmine in Shan state on Tuesday, November 26. According to a local volunteer rescue group, the two were hiking near the town of Hsipaw when they hit the mine. The area is a popular tourist scenic route for people traveling from Mandalay to the mountains. After the incident, police officials reiterated warnings that tourists are not allowed to hike around Hsipaw due to the risk of conflict and landmines.

In 2016, a landmine wounded two foreign travelers and their guide near Hsipaw. According to the 2019 Landmine Monitor Report, Myanmar has one of the highest casualty rates from landmines and is the only country with confirmed use of new antipersonnel mines.
