Vanuatu: 5.9-magnitude earthquake strikes near Gaua (Banks Islands) December 14

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 5.9-magnitude earthquake south-southeast of Gaua (Banks Islands) on Saturday, December 14. According to the USGS, the quake hit at approximately 15:57 (local time) at a depth of 27 km (17 mi). Officials did not immediately issue a tsunami warning and there were no immediate reports of casualties or infrastructural damage in the area.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger.
