Panama: Demonstrations scheduled in Panama City December 20

US Embassy warns of demonstrations in Panama City on December 20; transportation disruptions and heightened security presence expected

Warning

Event

The US Embassy in Panama City has issued an alert regarding demonstrations in the capital on Friday, December 20. Gatherings are expected to begin as of 08:00 (local time), to mark the 30-year anniversary of the US invasion called Operation Just Cause. Access on and off the Embassy compound will be restricted during the demonstration and the Consular Section will be closed to the public. The Panamanian government decreed December 20 as a day of national mourning, which may contribute to large turnouts.

Demonstrations and associated gatherings are to be expected throughout Panama City and in other urban centers. A heightened security presence and transportation disruptions such as road closures are to be expected throughout on Friday.

Advice

Individuals in Panama City and other urban areas across Panama are advised to monitor the situation, allow ample travel time, and avoid all protests as a precaution.
