Togo: Political gatherings scheduled in Lomé January 30-February 1

The Forces du Consensus Démocratique political group has called for political gatherings in Lomé between Thursday, January 30, and Saturday, February 1, ahead of the February 22 presidential elections. On Thursday, supporters of the movement are expected to gather in Kodjindji for a political meeting, while on Friday, another meeting is scheduled in Agoe. A large 'citizen's march' is scheduled on Saturday to protest perceived deficiencies in Togo's electoral and legal procedures. The exact times for the gatherings remain unclear as of Tuesday, January 28.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are anticipated near all gatherings.

Context

Togo will hold its presidential elections on Saturday, February 22. Should presidential candidates fail to obtain a majority greater than 51 percent, a second round will be held. Polling stations are due to open nationwide from 07:00 to 16:00 (local time) on February 22.

President Faure Gnassingbé has led Togo since 2005, and will run for a fourth term in the 2020 elections.

In May, parliament approved a constitutional amendment capping the presidential mandate to two five-year terms, allowing President Gnassingbé to potentially stay in office until 2030.
