Floods due to heavy rains leave three people dead in Bubanza Province as of late January; further rain expected in the coming days

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) report published on Tuesday, February 11, rain-triggered floods left three people dead in Bubanza Province as of late January. Floods also hit Bujumbura Mairie and Bujumbara Rural provinces displacing thousands and causing transportation disruptions.
Further heavy rainfalls are expected over the coming days, as well as subsequent transportation and communications disruptions.
Context
East Africa has recently experienced a bout of unseasonably heavy rainfalls due to higher-than-average water temperatures in the Indian Ocean This is partially attributed to a larger, global phenomenon of rising ocean temperatures.

Individuals in Burundi, and in Bubanza Province especially, are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas affected by landslides, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
