Rocket fire kills one in Baghdad November 17

Event

The firing of at least 15 rockets towards Baghdad's International Zone during the evening on Tuesday, November 17, has resulted in one fatality and five injuries. One projectile reportedly struck in the vicinity of the National Security Service whilst two landed within the US Embassy compound. Two rockets landed in the vicinities of the Baghdad Medical City Hospital and Zawra Park, both located outside of the International Zone. Multiple projectiles were also intercepted by air defences at the US embassy had been activated. Authorities have stated that an operation has been launched to apprehend those responsible for firing the projectiles. There has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks.

Similar attacks are possible in Baghdad over the near term.

Context

This incident is the first of its kind since the announcement of the suspension of attacks by hard-line Shia militias on October 11. The attack coincides with a statement issued by the US Department of Defense on November 17 on plans to reduce the presence of US troops in Iraq.
