Event
Anti-government protests in Chamchamal, Sulaymaniyah Governorate turned violent Dec. 7, killing at least one protester. Local reports indicate that the incident took place when security officers at the headquarters of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) opened fire at the protesters who were condemning deteriorating economic conditions. Related demonstrations have also been underway in other parts of Sulaymaniyah, including Piramagrun and Takiya sub-districts, where protesters set fire to the offices of KDP and Patriotic Union Kurdistan (PUK) political parties and blocked a number of roads with burning debris.
Security forces are deployed to disperse the protests and will likely remain in the area into at least early Dec. 8. Clashes between police and protesters are possible. Additional gatherings could occur over the coming days; ground travel disruptions are likely near any future protests that may materialize.

Avoid all protests due to the potential for violence. Exercise caution near likely demonstration sites. Leave immediately and take refuge in a secure, non-government building if clashes erupt or demonstrators begin engaging in acts of vandalism. Monitor local media for details concerning protest activity, as organizers may not announce plans in advance. Follow police instructions.
