Informational

Event

Opposition leaders plan protests during EU and Western Balkans summit in Tirana, Dec. 6. Protestors will be denouncing the cost of living and alleged government scandals. Local authorities have announced a range of increased security measures, including traffic and parking restrictions. Access to certain buildings will be subject to cordons and increased security, including the Prime Minister's offices, the National Assembly, the Congress Palace (where the summit will take place), and university and media buildings. It is not known at what time the demonstrations will take place, nor how many attendees are expected.

Authorities will likely deploy large numbers of police, both for summit security and to monitor and facilitate protests. Roadblocks and cordons will likely cause localized travel disruptions, including for public transport. Roads between the airport and central Tirana will also likely be disrupted during the arrival and departure of international leaders. Protests are likely to pass off peacefully.

Advice

Follow local security and travel advice. Allow extra time for travel in central Tirana and be aware of heightened security restrictions. Avoid all protests as a routine security procedure.
