Chile: Primary municipal and regional elections to be held November 29

Additional security deployed in Santiago ahead of nationwide primary municipal and regional elections on November 29; maintain heightened vigilance

Warning

Event

The government has deployed over 1000 additional security force personnel to central areas of the capital Santiago ahead of nationwide primary elections for the municipal and regional governments taking place on Sunday, November 29.

Related demonstrations are to be expected across Chile on Sunday and in the days after the election. Nationwide anti-government protests on Friday, November 27, resulted in the arrest of at least 25 people and scuffles between protesters and security forces.

A heightened security presence and localized transport disruptions are expected in the vicinity of any demonstration and clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Those in Chile are advised to monitor the situation, avoid the protest sites as a precaution, anticipate delays to transport, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
