Canada: Climate protests scheduled in several cities November 29

Climate activists to protest across Canada on November 29; transportation disruptions to be expected

Warning

Event

Several climate activist associations have called for pro-environmental protests across Canada on Friday, November 29, to denounce the commercial "Black Friday" retail event. Protests are scheduled in Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal, among many others.

Participants in Montreal will gather at Place des Festivals at 14:00 (local time). Those in Toronto will gather at Queens Park at 11:30 for a rally and later march at 12:00 to an unconfirmed location.

Additional protests are expected across Canada as thousands of participants are expected to attend, which are likely to prompt significant business and transportation disruptions.

A heightened security presence and transportation disruptions are to be anticipated around any demonstration.

Context

The protests are part of worldwide disruptive protests ongoing since 2018 to demand increased action to address climate change issues, and come ahead the COP25 climate conference to take place in Madrid between December 2-December 13.

Advice

Individuals in Canada are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all protests as a precaution, anticipate transportation disruptions, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
