Event

Three soldiers were killed and ten others wounded in a rocket-propelled grenade attack targeting a military logistics truck in the Rathedaung township (north of Rakhine state) on Sunday morning, December 16 (local time). The deadly attack took place 8 km (5 mi) from downtown Rathedaung, near the Htee Swea and Kyauk Tan villages. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack as of Tuesday, December 18. Further such attacks cannot be ruled out.

Context

Kyauk Tan village is located in the foothills of the Awrama mountain range, an area disputed between the Myanmar regular army and the Arakan Army, an ethnic armed group.

Advice

Individuals are advised to avoid all but essential travel to Rakhine State, except the southern townships of Kyaukpyu, Ramree, Munaung, Toungup, Thandwe (including the tourist resort of Ngapali), and Gwa.
