Reports have emerged over the possibility of contaminated water in Rio de Janeiro since the start of January. Residents have observed that water supply from taps are cloudy I in appearance and has an unusual taste and smell due to a geosmin contamination. Professionals have stated that the water is non-toxic and can be consumed, the unpleasant taste has left others opting for bottled water. Authorities have advised to treat the water with activated carbon to do away with the unpleasant taste and smell.
It is unclear as to how the contamination is being managed or when water supplies will be returned to normal.
