Japan: 5.5-magnitude earthquake strikes off northeastern coast of Hokkaido Island January 28

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 5.5-magnitude earthquake 40 km (25 mi) northeast of Nemuro (Hokkaido Island) at approximately 11:36 (local time) on Tuesday, January 28. The quake struck at a depth of 78 km (48 mi). There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. The Japan Meteorology Agency confirmed that the earthquake did not pose a tsunami risk.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.
