Bostwana: Flooding reported in southern and eastern Bostwana December 11

Botswana is experiencing heavy rains for several days as of December 11; transportation disruptions likely

Warning

Event

As of Wednesday, December 11, heavy rain and associated flooding and landslides are affecting the southern and eastern parts of Botswana, notably the Molepolole (Kweneng Distrit) and Mahalapye (Central District) areas. Conditions have persisted over the last several days. On Tuesday, December 10, a train derailed near the city of Palla Road (Central District, eastern Botswana) due to heavy downpour, killing two people and injuring several passengers. Road and infrastructure damages have also been reported in the affected areas.

The situation is likely to persist over the coming days; associated disruptions are possible.

Advice

Individuals in Bostwana are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
