Brazil: Transport hike protests to continue on January 23 /update 3

Organization schedules additional protest in São Paulo on January 23; transportation disruptions expected

The civil society group Passe Livre has called for a fourth protest in São Paulo on Thursday, January 23, in continued opposition to a transportation fare hike. The organization has called on government to completely eliminate transportation costs. Participants are scheduled to gather at the Terminal Pq. D. Pedro II at 17:00 (local time) and will begin a march at 18:00 towards an undisclosed location.

Associated transportation disruptions and a heightened security presence are to be expected in the vicinity of the protest. Skirmishes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.
